Reptiles
Reptiles are represented in the area of the Krka National Park by twenty-two species, of which sixteen are strictly protected.
Three species of lizards stand out among the endemic species of the Balkan peninsula: the Dalmatian wall lizard (Podarcis melisellensis), the blue-throated keeled lizard (Algyroides nigropunctatus), and the sharp-snouted rock lizard (Lacerta oxycephala). The attractive color brings attention to the Balkan green lizard (Lacerta trilineata), which can grow to over half a metre in length.
The group of reptiles contains three Natura target species: European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni), and the European ratsnake (Zamenis situla), the most attractive snake in Croatia.
Two species of snakes are tied to aquatic habitats: the grass snake (Natrix natrix) and dice snake (Natrix tessellata). There is only one poisonous snake in the Park, the horned viper (Vipera ammodytes), recognisable for its characteristic zig-zag stripes on its back and the horn at the tip of its nose.
