Let's give more for bats
The workshop is intended for children of preschool age and students in the lower grades of elementary school
Bats are an extremely important part of the world ecosystem as indicators of a healthy environment. The importance of bats in nature is manifested in their biological control of the abundance of insects and the pollination and dispersal of plant seeds. The main reasons for their endangerment are the loss of habitat (due to excessive felling of old trees with hollows, the filling of caves, the arrangement of caves for tourist visits, the coating of wooden beams with protective chemicals that are toxic), the use of pesticides, the reduction in the number of insects, disturbance, the drying of wetlands and water pollution, etc.
With the workshop “Let’s give more for bats”, we try to correct some of the prejudices about them: that they drink blood, that they stick in peoples’ hair, that they are blind – hence the saying “Blind as a bat”. The program consists of a short PowerPoint presentation, with a basic introduction to bats, and an interesting quiz.
Approximate duration of the workshop: 45 – 60 minutes
Recommended number of students in the group: 25
